Reader’s Question:

I’m thinking of tinting my rear windshield but before I do that I’d like to get some information about it. Thanks!

Aimee

Dover, DE

Hi Aimee. First thing that you need to consider when tinting your rear windshield is the laws and regulations. Most states do not allow tint on the vehicles’ front window and windshield. But the good thing is that majority of the state do allow tinting rear window, although there are still some restrictions that apply.

For one, when tinting your rear window, most states will not permit reflective tint, a type of tint is similar to those two-way mirrors. In addition, there is also restriction on how dark your tint will be. These laws differ from state to another so you better check laws applicable to tinting in your home. In addition, it would be best to check tinting laws in states near to your residence as well, just in case you drive and visit those places.

Moreover, when you travel in other states, you should always remember that your tint must meet the tinting laws in the state you are visiting. To make sure you will be in compliance with other state’s tinting laws, I would recommend that you choose a rear windshield tint that has a 35% or more visible-light transmission (VLT). This VLT measure the amount of light that can pass through your window’s tint.

I wanted to wait awhile to do my Windshield Wonder Review because I really wanted to put this product through the ringer. Most as seen on TV products seem to be things you use a couple of times and either break, or get rid of. But, I really liked the concept of the Windshield Wonder and really wanted this thing to work. So I ordered it and put it to the test.

I will say that when it arrived I was not really impressed. It seemed a bit flimsy for such a miracle product. For those who don’t know, the windshield wonder is a product designed to make cleaning the interior windows of your car easier. This has always been a huge pain for me because I can never reach the bottom of my windshield and hate twisting over the seats to jam a rag into the corners of my rear window. So something to make this easier would come in handy.

So after noticing that this thing wasn’t the most solid thing in the world, I put my first impressions aside and got down to work. The windshield wonder is nothing more than a long handle, pivoting head and micro-fiber bonnet to clean the glass but it works great! You can just sit in your front seat and glide it along the windshield and clean every smudge and streak. It’s really quite a difference when you don’t have to make window cleaning such a hassle. I usually get out of my car dizzy, sweating and exhausted so using this handy little product was awesome.

One advantage to note is that you do not have to use a window cleaning solution. Water works fine which saves a little money and also saves you from breathing fumes in the confined interior of your car. Speaking of being confined, the commercial clearly shows people using the windshield wonder in their homes so I tried that too.

As far using it to clean windows and sliding glass doors it’s terrific. You still will have to bend and reach a little bit but the job is a whole lot easier. It’s terrific for bathroom and hallway mirrors as well. You can use a glass cleaner if you like because the cleaning bonnets are machine washable. I haven’t bothered to actually try that, but I do rinse them out thoroughly in the sink and seem to get clean and keep in tact. I’m not completely sure where you can get replacement bonnets but as the product starts showing up in stores, I’m sure accessories will be available as well.

Overall, I’ve been pretty pleased and use my little tool whenever I wash my car. I will say this. In the past, I used to konk out after washing and waxing my car and never really had the energy for the interior, but now I always have a few minutes to make my glass squeaky clean.

Built to allow you to see out of the car but keep things from flying in with you is the windshield. It might not sound that fascinating, but it is a piece of art that you simply ignore until it cracks. When that happens many of us continue to ignore it until the crack has grown so large it’s an embarrassment. At this point you have two schools of thought repair or replace. While repairing it is good for small cracks any car that has a crack over three inches really needs to be have auto glass replacement.

It sounds like a hassle, like something that will keep you from your baby for weeks on end, but actually it’s fairly simple. Remove the old windshield, install a new one, and seal it up. Walla, auto glass replacement is done. That might be over simplifying the procedure but that really is all there is to it. What most people are afraid of isn’t having a new windshield it’s the looming question of will the new windshield leak in the rain, car wash, or snow.

To ensure that you get the best auto glass replacement you simply need to let your fingers do the walking. Okay, so you aren’t going to use the phone book but you can hop on the internet. You need to find a reputable company that comes with good customer reviews, a quality guarantee and, of course, someone that will help you deal with your insurance company, and having one that can give you a free estimate over the phone or online is an added bonus.

If you are interested in front or rear auto glass replacement then you might be able to find a company that will come to you to repair the car versus heading to them. If you need it on any of the doors replaced you will most likely have to take it in but rest assured that most places will have even this type of job completed in less than a day.

There is no reason to drive around with a broke up windshield. Auto glass replacement is simple and easy. Finding the company to do it for you might take a little finger work but it’s worth it. You want your car to be safe while you are driving on the road, and a broken windshield is just not really that safe. Take the time to find that company for you.

In minneapolis auto glass replacement companies are committed to providing prompt and courteous service to your needs at the lowest prices.

Installing a rear view mirror that has fallen is a simple job. It’s important to know how a common mistake could break the windshield if this simple task is done improperly. It’s very easy to glue the rear view mirror button upside down. I worked with someone years ago, that made this mistake. When he tried to remove the metal button from the windshield so it could be glued back on correctly the windshield was cracked! This simple job cost the company we worked for at the time, $350 to have a replacement windshield installed. Read on to find out what type of adhesive is recommended, the step by step instructions on how to secure the fallen mirror and what to do if the button was mistakenly glued on upside down.

Rear View Mirror Installation Tips (50 to 75 Degrees Fahrenheit)

Use a rear view mirror kit made specifically for bonding the rear view mirror back on (like Permatex Rearview Mirror Adhesive).

Separate the button from the rear view mirror. It is either held together with a screw or a spring retainer; the type without a screw will be pryed off with a screwdriver.

Mark the position where the mirror will be re-glued. Use a crayon or piece of paper tape on the outside of the windshield.

Scrape the old glue off of the inside of the windshield and the button. Clean the windshield and button with rubbing alcohol.

The activator vial has a separator built into it, squeeze the vial until the inner portion breaks, the two parts will mix and is ready for application.

Do not touch the surfaces with your fingers, apply the activator generously to the windshield and button. Allow to dry for 2 minutes.

Open the adhesive and apply ONE drop to the center of the button (apply to the correct side of the button). One drop only, more isn’t better.

Immediately hold the button in place on the windshield being sure that the it is right side up. Hold firmly for 60 seconds.

Wait for fifteen minutes before mounting the mirror to the button.

If the button was glued on upside down or the wrong side to the glass, DO NOT try to remove it. Prying or heating to remove an incorrectly installed button may result in cracking the windshield! It’s best if this happens to purchase a new button and bond it on top of the incorrectly installed button.

Be careful not to cut yourself with a plain razor blade, it’s recommended to use a scraper like we have at DenLors Tools that holds the razor blade more safely. If the mirror is held in with a screw, it may be a torx type and not a regular philips.
